Penn-ICOWHI 18th International Congress on Women’s Health : “CITIES AND WOMEN’S HEALTH: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES”
Wednesday, April 7- Saturday, April 10, 2010
Location: University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Website: www.icowhi.org
Event Description: The aim of the Penn-ICOWHI 18th Congress, Cities and Women’s Health: Global Perspectives, is to deconstruct urban planning in terms of its potential to better support women’s health. When structuring an urban environment conducive to promoting and preserving women’s health, we must give up the assumption that the needs of women are the same as for men in order to understand the health needs of women in cities. In fact, there are remarkable opportunities to have profound impact on meeting the unique needs of urban women by bringing together professionals from all facets of health care, health policy and urban design, among others, to open interdisciplinary discussions about their work.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: We invite you to submit an abstract to be considered for oral or poster presentation at the Penn-ICOWHI 18th Congress in Philadelphia, PA, USA on April 7-10, 2010. The focus/content of your abstract must relate to one of the six distinctive themes: 1. Women’s Health, Urban Planning and Development 2. Diseases and Conditions of Women and Girls in Urban Environments across the Lifespan 3. The Social Environment and Health: Context of Risk and Resiliency for Urban Women and Girls 4. Building Partnerships, Collaborations and Opportunities to Promote Urban Women’s Health 5. Translating Interdisciplinary Research to Policy and Practice: Advancing Women’s Health in Cities 6. Human Rights, Women’s Rights and Justice: Fostering Health in Urban Settings
Program information, abstract specifics and submission guidelines are available via the ICOWHI website - http://www.icowhi.org.

Event Description:
Part 1: Foundations of Healthy Sexuality: Clinical Care for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Brent A. Satterly, PhD, LCSW, CSE
Core Knowledge: Human sexuality is one of the basic foundations for life. From before birth, individuals are sexed, gendered and bombarded with messages about who they are, who they should be and how they are expected to behave. Because sexuality is one of the central and organizing components of the human experience, sexual trauma in childhood can be especially problematic and debilitating for adults and children. This program will provide a comprehensive strengths-based model of human sexuality and development as a foundation for sound clinical care of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Helping survivors re-assess, reclaim, and re-norm their sexuality as part of their healthy personhood will be addressed.
Part 2: An Ecological Understanding of Child Sexual Abuse, Anthony Goldsmith, MA
Core Knowledge: Child sexual abuse treatment is a specialized therapeutic approach to the traumatic symptoms that are caused by the experience of being molested. To fully understand the nature of child sexual abuse and its treatment, it is necessary to clearly define what it is (and isn’t), the legal aspects of child sexual abuse, and how prevalent the problem is in our society. A broader look will include a review of the psychology of offenders, the interaction between offenders and victims, and how that interaction informs approaches to treatment of children and adults who are survivors of sexual abuse. Defining treatment goals, along with methods to reach those goals, will be discussed. Finally, the impact on the therapist of engaging in child sexual abuse treatment will be examined.
